The Netherlands, although a small country, it certainly packs a punch. Mostly in good ways.
The Netherlands doesn’t try to impress you and that’s its secret power. It’s straightforward, practical, and quietly progressive. Living there taught me about self-sufficiency, boundaries, design, and the beauty of keeping things simple. Here’s what I learned living in the Netherlands:

Life on Two Wheels…
.) Biking is not exercise. It’s transportation.
.) Bike lanes > car lanes.
.) You can bike in heels, a suit, or a storm.
.) You’ll be judged for poor cycling etiquette.
.) Don’t walk in a bike lane. They will mow you down.
.) The Dutch learn balance early both literally and emotionally.
.) Bike locks are thicker than most relationships.
.) You’ll learn to carry everything on a bike, groceries, pets, furniture.
.) Helmets are for tourists.
.) Rain doesn’t cancel rides. Neither does snow.

A Culture of Practicality…
.) Nothing is “just because.” There’s always a reason.
.) Birthdays are structured. You’ll say “congratulations” to everyone.
.) Celebrations are calm, not chaotic.
.) Planning ahead is a love language.
.) No one is late and if they are, it’s noted.
.) Efficiency is expected.
.) Frills are unnecessary. Function always wins.
.) Everything has a system and it works.
.) People stick to plans; spontaneity is rare.
.) Weather apps are checked religiously.

Dutch Directness…
.) The Dutch aren’t rude. They’re honest.
.) Small talk is optional. Truth is not.
.) Compliments are rare and are therefore sincere.
.) You’ll be called out gently but clearly.
.) If they don’t like you, you’ll know.
.) If they do like you, they’ll roast you.
.) Emails are efficient, not emotional.
.) Disagreements are handled calmly and thoroughly.
.) Saying “no” is healthy and encouraged.
.) You’ll grow thicker skin and clearer, defined boundaries.

Minimalism as a Lifestyle
.) Dutch homes are small but perfectly and cleverly organized.
.) Clutter is a sin.
.) Ikea is basically a religion.
.) White walls, wood floors, and green plants is the complete Dutch aesthetic.
.) You don’t need more stuff. You need better use of space.
.) Capsule wardrobes aren’t a trend, they’re the norm.
.) Food is simple. Bread-heavy. Efficient.
.) Comfort > flair = always.
.) “Gezellig” is not Pinterest cozy, it’s human connection.
.) Less really is more.

What I Carried With Me…
.) Independence is freedom.
.) Boundaries are a form of respect.
.) You don’t owe everyone an explanation.
.) Privacy is valuable and it’s earned.
.) Community can be quiet, but strong.
.) Doing your own thing is admired.
.) You’re not special and that’s not an insult.
.) Balance is THE real goal.
.) Nature is woven into daily life.
.) The Netherlands taught me that you don’t need attention to be impactful, you just need clarity, calm, and confidence.
